The game was well-received upon release, and won several awards, including GameSpot's "Best Real-Time Strategy Game of 1999" and IGN's "Best PC Strategy Game of 1999". New technologies include the Tiberium Vaporizer, which can be used to clear large areas of Tiberium, and the Ion Cannon, a powerful space-based weapon. Tiberian Sun introduces a number of new units to the series, such as the GDI Firehawk aircraft and the Nod Scorpion tank. The game's new features include the ability to zoom in and out of the battlefield, and a day-night cycle that affects unit visibility and combat effectiveness.
